Wikipedia says: A potluck is a gathering where each guest contributes a different and unique dish of food, often homemade, to be shared. The concept dates back to the 16th century, in an English work of Thomas Nashe. And, the expression “communal meal” originated in the 1930’s during the Depression and is an extension of the term “luck of the pot.”
Bay Crest is a charming beach community in Huntington Bay, on the north shore of Long Island.
It is a special place, as you enter thru the 100+ year old gates with stone pillars and you drive through the private roads, where there are 45 houses, some of which are over 130 years old. Our beach and private enclave is a true gem, a wonderful community for children to grow-up and adults to establish relationships and a beautiful lifestyle. Several beach pavilion parties are organized by a committee during the months of June-October, which are always very well attended and lots of fun.
Sunset at Bay Crest beach
August 19, 2017 was a spectacular night for the annual Bay Crest Potluck dinner. Over 100 people attended. At sunset, martinis were in abundance, wine was flowing and champagne corks were popping. The array of food dishes was incredible, ranging from chicken, steak, pastas, salads, noodles, focaccia, vegetables, pigs-in-the-blanket, sliders, fish, shrimp, and much more. Many nationalities were represented in the potluck assortment: Italian, Greek, South Asian, Moroccan, Southern barbecue, Chinese and traditional American. My contribution was thai noodles, which I made with scallions, ginger, cilantro, sesame oil and peanut butter. I also use a great thai peanut sauce, that I buy in my local gourmet market. The noodles are dressed with carrots and celery slivers, crushed peanuts, scallions and fresh cilantro. There was something for everyone to enjoy. Conversation amongst family, friends and neighbors and dancing to the DJ’s variety of tunes continued till 11PM. Such a good vibe and a great mood carried on throughout the evening. Simpatica!
Our dinner table included 3 members and our guests including my dear friend Linda and her husband Tom, who were so happy to be back, as 9 years ago they had their marriage ceremony on the Bay Crest dock. Food and wine is clearly a focal point for friends to gather and share in an activity or party, fostering relationships and creating memories. At the end of the evening, I explained to our guests that there was only one rule to Potluck: Once you attend the Potluck dinner at Bay Crest, you must return every year!

August 2022
Here we are again at Potluck. I was fortunate to have my niece, my Goddaughter Maya visiting with us for a few days. What a great activity for us and for her to spend time at our beach and our annual Pot Luck. Everyone was very welcoming to Maya and she enjoyed chatting with people, helping out with the raffles, all the good food and of course, the dancing. Bay Crest is a true gem!
